Syed Husin @ Hussein bin Ali was born in Batu Pahat, Johor, on 23rd September 1936. He is a prominent politician, academic and social activist, well known both within and outside the country.
In 1990, he was elected as the President of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM). Following that election, he was asked to leave his job as Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in the University of Malaya. He took optional retirement after having served as a member of the teaching staff for almost 28 years.
When PRM and the National Justice Party (Parti Keadilan) merged to launch the People’s Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) on 3rd August 2003, he was declared the Deputy President. He gave up this position in 2010.
Syed Husin has written and edited close to 20 books; prepared more than 100 papers for journals and conferences, both international and domestic; and articles for the local media. He has been involved as an expert for the United Nations University and UNESCO, as well as prepared evaluation reports on workers’ and women’s movements for international bodies.
As a social activist, he involved himself in various activities to champion human rights, especially in relation to ISA detention and housing for the urban pioneers. At the international level, he has been a member of the Mission to Inquire Into Mass Killings in Bangkok, Panel of Judges for the People’s Permanent Tribunal on Industrial and Environmental Hazards in Bhopal, India, and the International Investigation on Displaced People in Sri Lanka.
Syed Husin was detained under the ISA for six years (1974-80) without trial following the demonstration by peasants in Baling and students in Kuala Lumpur. He is currently a Senator, representing Selangor state.
